Abstract

France, like many countries, faces many challenges to maintain universal coverage for its population. While many of the reforms undertaken seem to be inspired by foreign models based on the principles of new public management, it is surprising to note that the development of nursing leadership, which is an effective strategy in many countries, is not a priority in France. The recent decision to introduce advanced practice nurses into the French health system and to encourage them, in addition to their clinical activities to demonstrate clinical leadership within their team, seems to constitute a major paradigm shift. It is therefore necessary to explore the context in which this decision was taken and to anticipate how this change will be operationalized. Effective strategies need to be adopted to address the potential challenges that will be encountered by this new category of nurses in developing their leadership to the benefit of patients, healthcare teams, and the health system.
