This chapter examines the Spanish withdrawal from Iraq and the dramatic political crisis with Washington that followed. To this end, it unveils for the first time the precise content of the crucial bilateral meetings with Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell. In the end—this study reveals—it was Foreign Minister Moratinos’s proposal to increase the Spanish military contribution in Afghanistan—as a kind of compensatory measure–which eventually brought the relationship back on track. Nevertheless, President Bush personally never forgave Zapatero for his decision to withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq and therefore refused to invite him to the White House.
