Seinsgeschichte and Death

Throughout this part, I have several times indicated the important role death plays in the history of being. I shall now further explicate what I take Heidegger to mean when he says that “[f]or the first and only time in the history of beyng, the essence of death must now be experienced and interrogated out of beyng itself.” (GA 71: 190/162) I do so by way of a discussion of my understanding of the history of being. One should not underestimate the scope of this claim by Heidegger. He very clearly here says that the essence of death, i.e., its historically unfolding dimensionality, has not yet been brought into focus in the history of thought. Moreover, death now is clearly an interest of beyng itself and even though human beings have been mortal beings since their very origins, they have not yet become proper mortals. By explicating this remark by Heidegger it will be easier to understand his later call for mortals to become mortals.
