Comparison of the correlation functions of bright and faint galaxies

It is a generally accepted assumption that correlation is independent of absolute magnitude. We choose two samples from the CfA galaxy catalogue: bright galaxies with magnitudes M ≤ 19.16 and faint galaxies with M ≥ 17.16. We have found that the bright galaxies are significantly stronger correlated than the faint galaxies. In the most characteristic range of separations the ratio of pair-frequencies is nearly constant: (ζbright(r) ± 1)1(ζfaint(r) + 1) = 2.15 ± 0.1 for 2 Mpc ≤ r ≤ 8 Mpc.
