Abstract

MERCURY, THE innermost planet of our Solar System, has long been a neglected target of spacecraft exploration. That situation changed in August 2004 with the launch of MESSENGER, shorthand for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging mission (Fig. 1). After a long and circuitous route through the inner Solar System MESSENGER will become the first probe to orbit Mercury in March 2011.
