In chapter 1, we discussed the importance of nonlinear systems in everyday life. In this chapter, we present the different methods of identifying nonlinear systems based on the model of describing the system. The importance of the model used in describing the nonlinear system is underscored here because the model chosen ultimately determines the quality and type of solution realized. A system identification method is only as good as the model it utilizes.
