This circulates the fluid around the system and provides the pressure necessary to overcome the load at its outlet port. All pumps used in hydrostatic systems are positive-displacement, i.e. a definite volume of pumping chamber is swept out for every revolution of the drive shaft. This volume is the capacity of the pump, which may be fixed capacity, i.e. the pump is constructed so that the capacity is constant; or variable capacity, i.e. the pump construction is such that the capacity may be varied by suitable adjustment of the stroke mechanism. Note: although the capacity may be varied, the unit is still positive-displacement.
