These are two methods of representing a dynamic system and both help with the understanding of a system in detail. Only linear systems can be represented in these diagrams (unless a non-linear system is linearised first) and from the diagrams the system transfer function can be readily obtained. This approach then leads to a study of system stability and steady-state frequency response. Before either of the diagrams can be constructed it is necessary to obtain the equations which represent the system, but it is not necessary to combine these to give a single equation. A series of examples is given which illustrate the construction and use of these diagrams.
