## Abstract

Much work in mathematical analysis is centred around the concept of a function. Expressions like x3 − 3x + 1 have little significance until some values are specified for x. When values are specified, the expression x3 − 3x + 1 is said to be a function of x and we write
$${\text{f:}}\,x \mapsto {x^3} - 3x + 1 = y,\,\,{\text{say}}{\text{.}}$$
