Abstract

This chapter studies the internal environment we create inside buildings and the scientific background to this environment. A general aim is to ensure that a building provides a pleasant space where humans can live and work in comfort, without wasting energy. Topic areas involved in the assessment and control of the internal environment include those listed below:
  • Thermal insulation

  • Heat losses and gains

  • Energy use

  • Thermal comfort conditions

  • Air quality

  • Sound comfort

  • Noise measurement

  • Lighting measurement

  • Lighting conditions.
