On 16 August 1945 Churchill telegraphed Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and congratulated him on the victory over Japan. He stressed the debt the world owed China for the ‘tenacious and prolonged resistance’ of her armies and paid a tribute to Chiang’s ‘inspiring leadership and steadfast adherence to the cause of free-dom and democracy’. The British statesman, now out of office, expressed the hope that the two peoples would continue ‘to march side by side as fellow builders of peace’.1
