Three great streams of scientific inquiry—into the mechanism of evolution, the laws of inheritance and experimental embryology—had their source in the second half of the nineteenth century. These converged a century later to provide deep insights into the mechanistic basis of animal development, how genes control developmental processes, and the evolutionary origins of the metazoan body plan. This convergence was brought about, in no small part, by Edward B. Lewis.
