Computerised Total Parenteral Nutrition
Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is a relatively new technique for providing all the nutritional needs of a patient in whom oral feeding is either not possible or not desirable. The conditions where TPN has gained widest acceptance include entero-cutaneous fistulae, active inflammatory bowel disease and prolonged ileus. We have also found it very useful in the management of acute pancreatitis. More controversial indications include preoperative feeding before major procedures, short-term postoperative feeding, and as a supplement to enteral nutrition. Because of its high cost, it is necessary to select patients carefully and to provide TPN in the most cost-effective manner possible.
