Abstract

In spite of his outward successes, Charnley became progressively disillusioned with the work which he was able to do in Manchester. There were several reasons why this was so and why the conditions which he had hoped for when he returned from the Army were not fulfilled. Money was short in hospitals and universities in the 1950s and this made it difficult for him to obtain the facilities which he needed for his research.
