Vitamin C

Scurvy, Dr. Pauling, Cancer, and Colds

Abstract

There are two quite distinct stories that must be told regarding vitamin C. The first is concerned with a deficiency disease, scurvy, its practical eradication, and the identification of the responsible vitamin. The principal characters are a British sea captain, two Norwegian scientists, and a group of guinea pigs. The second vitamin C story has Linus Pauling, twice winner of the Nobel prize, in the leading role. It is Pauling, more than any other individual, who is responsible for the present level of use, some would say abuse, of vitamin C in this country.
