Abstract

In late 1986 the National Institutes of Health sought applicants to establish “Programs of Excellence of Research on Osteoporosis.” In the words of NIH, “osteoporosis is a frequently occurring disease (or possibly several related diseases) that leads to weakened bone that fractures more easily than normal bone. The condition affects as many as 15–20 million individuals in the United States.”
