Abstract

As we noted in Chapter 1, the possibility of a short-range modification to Newtonian gravity was first raised in a seminal paper by Fujii [1971], who proposed a new interaction mediated by a hypothetical field called thedila-ton.For two masses i and jthis interaction would give rise to an effective gravitational interaction of the form
$$V\left( r \right) \cong - \frac{3}{4}\frac{{{{G}_{\infty }}{{m}_{i}}{{m}_{j}}}}{r}\left( {1 + \frac{1}{3}{{e}^{{ - r/\lambda }}}} \right).$$
