Problems of statistical matching in which the two micro-data files being matched consisted of the same individuals were discussed in Chapter 2. Furthermore, practical and legal reasons for the unavailability of micro data files on the same individuals were cited in Chapter 1. In such a situation, we may have two files of data that pertain to similar individuals. Allowing for some matching variables to be observed for each unit in the two files, we seek to merge the files so that inference problems relating to the variables not present in the same file can be addressed.
