An Immunochemical Approach to the Isolation of Human Melanoma-Associated Antigens

Part of the Contemporary Biomedicine book series (CB, volume 2)

“One of the principal hopes of the control of cancer lies fundamentally in a knowledge of the chemical nature of the malignant cell, and in successful development of chemotherapeutic approaches which must depend upon this knowledge.” So wrote Dr. Jesse P. Greenstein in his book, The Biochemistry of Cancer in 1947 (Greenstein, 1947). The enormous complexity of this task is apparent when one considers that thirty-three years later many attempts are still in progress to characterize neoplastic cells biochemically. Although the general literature on cancer research and the publication of this volume per se indicate that a great deal of progress has been made, the search for relevant tumor markers continues.
