Inhibition of the Erythrocyte Na+, K+-Pump by Mammalian Lignans: A Possible Link with Endogenous Digitalis

Natural products formed by oxidative dimerization of phenols, most lignans belong to the vegetal world. However, related structures have been found recently in human and animal urines (1,2). These mammalian lignans are characterized by the presence of the meta hydroxyl group on each aryl cycle of a dibenzyl-gamma-butyrolactone framework (Fig. 1, ref 3).
