Abstract

Real estate economics (REE) as a field of both research and education has a relatively short tradition in Finland. This is partly because of the special features of the Finnish property market. The construction sector has traditionally had a leading role in the Finnish real estate business, mainly due to the relatively strict regulation and planning process. The real estate business was always considered to be a part of the construction industry, which was the focus of both research and education. Until recently, there have been very few people with a background in economics or business administration in the real estate business. This has naturally influenced academic RE education. Construction management and related topics, together with surveying, dominated real estate education until the 1990’s.
