The cell is the basic building block of the nervous system and indeed, the whole body. On our way to an understanding of the nervous system, a working knowledge of the capacities of individual cells will be most helpful. The cell membrane (Chapter 3) delimits the cell and is the boundary between the sodium and chloride rich extracellular fluid and the potassium and protein containing intracellular fluid.
