First Identification of High Spin States in 164Ta

High spin states of 164Ta were investigated for the first time. The residual nuclei were produced in the reaction 142Nd(27A1,5n)164Ta at an incident energy of 150 MeV. The new AFRODITE array at the National Accelerator Centre, South Africa, was used to detect the resulting gamma radiation. A brief description of AFRODITE is given. Spectra of both the favoured and un-favoured sequences of one pair of signature partner bands as well as a tentative level scheme is presented. Further analysis is in progress.
