Demand for and Use of Additional Lines by Residential Customers

Abstract

According to a New York Times article (Landler, 1995), 1995 had “the biggest single-year increase in new residential phone lines in the United States since the end of World War II, and the percentage of households with more than one line nearly doubled in 1995 to 16 percent.” This increase was due to several information-age forces, such as the fax machine, home offices and computer modems. When Landler (1995) interviewed families, he found that they needed additional lines for the computer, on-line services, children, personal calls, business calls, and faxes. Additionally, the multiple line household was skewed toward the more affluent. These results were confirmed by other studies.
