Experimental Design in Ornithology

Abstract

Just a few minutes scanning the pages of any major ornithology journal reveals that research with birds takes many different forms, There are several ways to classify this research: by subject area, by type of dependent variable, or by the nature of the independent variable, for example. One important dimension is the extent to which the research is experimental, involving the control and manipulation of variables that could affect the outcome. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss experimental design in ornithological research. I will begin by discussing some general issues relating to scientific data collection. I will then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different types of experimental design with an emphasis on the decisions a researcher must make during the design process. In the final section, I will present an outline of the steps to take in designing research and suggest some further reading.
