Stimulation of Granulopoiesis in vitro and in vivo Using Lithium in Children with Chronic Neutropenia

Psychiatric patients have been observed to have a dramatic increase in their neutrophil counts while on lithium (Li) therapy (Mayfield and Brown, 1966). There are reports of the ability of lithium to improve chemotherapy-induced neutropenia in cancer patients (Greco et al., 1976; Stein et al., 1977) and in Felty’s syndrome (Gupta et al., 1975). Lithium appears to act through a direct stimulation of committed granulocytic progenitors (CFU-c) (Tisman et al., 1973; Morley and Galbraith, 1978) as well as an increase of colony-stimulating activity (CSA), the humoral stimulator of granulopoiesis (Harker et al., 1977; Gupta et al., 1976). Our purpose was to study and correlate the in vitro and in vivo effect of lithium on granulopoiesis in children with chronic neutropenia.
