Lithium carbonate can increase granulocyte production in psychiatric patients (Rothstein et al., 1978) and normal subjects (Stein et al., 1978b). Administration of lithium has improved neutropenia in cases of Felty’s syndrome (Gupta et al., 1975), aplastic anemia (Barrett et al., 1977; Blum, 1979), and congenital neutropenia (Barrett et al., 1977). On this basis, we instituted a pilot study to determine the efficacy of lithium in the treatment of neutropenia or diverse etiologies. This report presents the results of that trial.
