Simply attaching the label schizophrenia to a person may have little predictive power except to stigmatize and damage the person, whether the diagnosis is “correct” or not. Strauss and Carpenter (1981) noted their “belief that labeling an individual as schizophrenic and the social consequences of many of the behaviors of schizophrenic patients induce reactions and expectations which are antitherapeutic in nature” (p. 4).
