Cultural Broker Agents: A Framework for Managing Cultural Misunderstandings

Abstract

Cultural differences are recognized as a main barrier in activities involving communication and cooperative work; however, given the anthropological nature of the concept of culture, there is a lack of related technological developments. We propose a platform based on cognitive agents for improving multicultural interactions. Agents manage cultural profiles and obtain contextual information about user interactions. Interactions are defied as sequences of actions divided into stages, which are accomplished as interactions take place. Conflicts are defined within interactions, and evaluated based on cultural differences and contextual information. Cultural profiles are inspired on theories which summarize culture as a set of quantitative components. Such cultural components are represented in the platform as linguistic variables; cultural differences are evaluated using fuzzy logic and approximate reasoning. All along the chapter, the concepts presented are illustrated with a case study for managing cultural profiles and cultural conflicts according to the model proposed by Hofstede.
