Abstract

The growth of cells, tissues, and organs of higher plants under sterile conditions on chemically-defined media in vitro has been possible for many plant species. The technique of tissue culture of higher plant materials has, in other words, passed through the phase where cultures were attempted just to see what species of the isolated tissues would grow for unlimited periods in vitro. The method has become well established and many different types of plant materials are now routinely cultured for extended periods. Furthermore, application of the method has been made to studies of a wide range of basic problems related both to normal and diseased growth.
