Abstract

The demand for a highly efficient method for separating and measuring biological substances was an important incentive leading to the development of gasliquid chromatography by Martin and coworkers (Martin and Synge, 1941; James and Martin, 1952a), but subsequent refinement of the art has been largely the responsibility of engineers, physicists and chemists, especially those in the petrochemical industry. Since 1952, caught up in the dazzling emergence of a new and powerful technique, biologists have been slow to appreciate fully the advantages which have become available to them, and reports of application of gas chromatography to biological and biochemical problems have accumulated in a haphazard fashion. This review is intended to bring together the scattered information in this area, and it is particularly directed toward the plant analyst who may wish to apply gas chromatography to his special problem, or who would like to know if it can be applied.
