Abstract

About a year ago Michael Wolfle of MGM MediaGruppe Miinchen together with Birgit Hiither and Hans Lauber approached me first with a question, and then with an idea. The question was simple: what do European communication scholars and scientists Imow and think about the general trends that shape the development of communication, and what issues do they find of particular importance? Not surprisingly, the answer to this question had to be typical for the academic world: communication scholars — as their colleagues in other fields — specialise in many ways, and within each given field they tend to differentiate (and to disagree) rather than strive for common generalisations.
