Educating for Sustainability in New Zealand: Success Through Enviroschools

Abstract

In a world with increasing environmental and social problems, education is widely accepted as being critical for meeting current and predicted sustainable development issues. In New Zealand, the Enviroschools Program, a curriculum relevant and successful transformational learning model, is being used in many primary schools, including kura (Maori language schools) and some secondary schools. The Enviroschool Foundation trained facilitators work closely with teachers and students, and the wider school community. These regional networks of facilitators are well supported by a small core national team with a coherent vision of more sustainable communities. This chapter outlines the background and development of education for sustainability in New Zealand, discusses the many benefits of the Enviroschools Program and notes the importance of building relationships and partnerships to enable the program to become available to more schools. Possible reasons for the relatively low levels of learning for sustainability in both secondary and tertiary educational institutions in New Zealand and the need for better engagement of youth with sustainability learning are explored.
