Advance in plant breeding depends upon the availability of genetic variability. Land races and primitive varieties were used in breeding programmes in the past, but more recently may have been neglected when better adapted and high yielding varieties have become available. Another potential source of variability within cultivated germplasm may be material which has been obtained by irradiation, mutagenesis and recently also by somacloning.
