On establishing the pedigree of all oat cultivars licensed in Germany since 1900, we find a very narrow relationship between them. Nearly all cultivars trace back to the crossing of two landraces: i.e. a yellow and a white oat. The early breeding work included crossings between yellow and white oats on the one hand and brown oats on the other.
