Abstract

The advent of recombinant DNA methodologies is now allowing for the more rapid improvement of crop parameters. Seeds are now being ‘engineered’ with new foreign genes being added to them or deleterious genes being inactivated by targeted insertion of DNA elements. The agri-food industry shall only remain competitive by continuing to produce cultivars that are custom-tailored for agronomic conditions and food processing requirements. To do this the plant breeding community and cereal geneticists must rapidly assimilate and master the newly available techniques of plant molecular biology such as Ti-plasmids, tissue culture, protoplast fusion, viral vectors, transposons and gene signals.
