Abstract

Variation is observed among plants regenerated from callus cultures. This ‘somaclonal’ variation has been recorded in a wide range of plant species. The heritable variation produced in this way can be for agriculturally important characters and therefore may be of value for crop improvement. Changes in chromosomes may also give an opportunity for genetic analysis and gene transfer.
