Optical Correlation Phenomena

Abstract

Having prepared the basic quantum formalism we can start a quantum-mechanical treatment of correlation and coherence phenomena in the electromagnetic field, and show relations between various kinds of experiments and the corresponding quantum correlation functions. We consider the detection of a field using the interaction of this field with matter. If the detection device, composed of atoms, is assumed to be in its ground state, then photons are registered by absorption. Such detectors of light are photocells, photographic plates, etc.
