Heisenberg—Langevin and Master Equations Approaches to the Statistical Properties of Radiation Interacting with Matter

Abstract

In this chapter we introduce the Heisenberg — Langevin approach, the master equation approach, and the related generalized Fokker — Planck equation approach, to the statistical properties of radiation in interaction with matter. First we consider a model of the interaction of a one-mode radiation field with an infinite reservoir boson system (the quantum theory of damping). Then we consider the interaction of the electromagnetic field with a system of two-level atoms. The methods presented in this chapter will be applied to propagation of radiation in random and nonlinear media in Chapters 8 and 9.
