Abstract

Through the discovery of enzymes that cut and splice DNA, powerful methods have become available to isolate and analyse DNA fragments from virtually any organism. The application of these methods, called recombinant DNA technology, to practical problems has become an important part of the growing industry of genetic engineering. Although, considerable progress has been made in the application of these techniques to medicine and agriculture, comparable work in forestry is just beginning.
