Abstract

The study of biological evolution was, for a long time after Lamarck and Darwin, conducted on visible phenotypes (mainly morphology). The morphologies of extant species were compared; just as important were paleontological studies of the remains of organisms unearthed as fossils; through such studies much valuable knowledge on biological evolution was obtained.
