Abstract

The Japanese attack on Nanjing was an extension of the attack on Shanghai, while the attack on Shanghai was a “natural” development of the whole trend after the Lugouqiao Incident. As “Nanjing Massacre” has been recognized as a fact for a long time, it is impossible for Japanese fictionists to win. They stress that the first shot from Lugouqiao was just “provoked” by the Chinese side but ignore the fact that Lugouqiao is the Chinese territory. Besides, they insisted the “legitimacy” of the Japanese garrison. This contradicts and cannot be self-consistent with the idea of affirming the modern Japanese line and denying the Western powers in the Meiji Restoration.
