Abstract

On 24 July 1956, at precisely 12.32 pm, a young man named Abdel Hamid Abubakr arrived for an appointment with the President of Egypt. He was accompanying his boss, Mahmoud Younis, who was in charge of the Revolutionary Command Council’s Technical Division. The two men expected to be congratulated on the successful opening of their new pipeline, and were surprised at the unusually tense atmosphere in Nasser’s office. Two minutes late for their meeting (relatively prompt by Cairo standards), they were roundly scolded. When they were shown in to see the President, his opening gambit was equally disconcerting. ‘What do you know about the Suez Canal?’ he asked.
