Abstract

The video and lyrics of the song ‘Close to me’ from the Cure show the real transcendence, violence, and cruelty implicit in the words ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ or many other expressions of homophobia that confine many children, adolescents, and grownups to life in a closet: ‘But if I had your faith / Then I could make it safe and clean / If only I was sure / That my head on the door was a dream.’1
