Abstract

In homophobia we see a characteristic of sexual orientation diversity that accentuates its differences from most other types of diversity, since in this case, the negative discriminatory reaction does not only come from the external social world — rather, there is a strong, generalized rejection also in the environments closest to the individual. This isolates the person, preventing them from evolving to a level of acceptance through communication, and makes it impossible for them to even consider it feasible to look for comfort from those near them in the face of external attacks. Without question, it is an important factor in terms of tipping the balance against the denial of one’s own sexual orientation.
